Monk is a musician from Canada. Monk's music would be
classified as post-punk with psychedelic tendencies and relies strongly on the
use of electric guitar and effects. Influences range from blues to industrial.
The music is often meant to express strong emotions (like the blues.)
There is sometimes a left-liberal political message in his music or videos, but
sometimes the politics are a metaphor for a more personal meaning.
Genesis
Monk started making music with an angry song on the subject of
religion, inspired by the behavior of some religious people in his life.
From there, he went on to tackle a variety of topics, including
politics, fascism, sexism, racism, the environment, and so on...
making a lot of great songs and videos along the way.
The Evolution of an Image
The picture of Monk is a morphed image of the artist with that of a Monkey created
using a now defunct website and further enhanced in Photoshop, mostly by adding more
hair and wrinkles. The original intent was to play up the relationship between man
and the animal kingdom, but it was also done out of Monk's respect for Zen Buddhism
and his enjoyment of the comedy television show "The Monkees" when he was a young boy,
not to mention the whole "Planet of the Apes" series. And so on... Because of his
politics, Monk prefers to remain Anonymous.
